Updated!
This revision includes expanded coverage of many topics and technical enhancements throughout the text. The revision includes a detailed index, making this valuable reference tool even easier to use!
This is the essential reference for engineering, design, drafting, quality, inspection, manufacturing, procurement, assembly and service personnel and students. The material is developed carefully in a technically and mathematically precise manner, but presented in a way that makes this often tricky subject easy-to-understand. The book is written from the point-of-view of the design engineer who must understand and apply GD&T specifications, but it is equally suited to other disciplines who must understand GD&T.
This work is a culmination of many years of experience in many industries. Applications and environments have ranged from ultra-small parts to very large; from private industry to government and DOD work; from mom and pop shops to multi-national corporations; from one-of-a-kind to mass-production, dealing with part quantities of up to 100 million parts per year; from environments where GD&T is welcomed and seen as a much needed tool, to environments where its value is questioned and it is viewed with suspicion and skepticism.
This text starts with basic GD&T concepts, develops and presents them clearly, and explains how they work together to create the language and systems of GD&T. Datums and Datum Reference Frames are covered in-depth, followed by detailed treatment of each of the fourteen Geometric Tolerances. Nuances of syntax and context are also presented in detail. More advanced topics such as Composite Feature Control Frames, Simultaneous Requirements, Free State, Flexible and Restrained Parts and other topics are covered in detail. The material in the book is the basis for our GD&T training courses.
The material represents some of the latest thinking on GD&T, using up-to-date methods and ideas to explain the concepts. Much of the material is structured to address problems encountered as a direct result of the author's experience training and consulting with companies over the years. The focus of many of the figures and sections directly addresses the many misconceptions common in industry today. Indeed that is the goal of this text and our GD&T courses, to clearly explain the material and dispel misconceptions for those already "familiar" with GD&T.

This is the definitive work on the subject of Tolerancing, Tolerance Stackups and Tolerance Analysis. It starts with fundamental concepts and terminology, explaining why tolerances must be specified, why variation exists and discusses its sources. The book then develops standard problem solving and analytical techniques using a logical, progressive approach, taking the reader through a series of examples and exercises increasing from very simple to complex. The book stresses and explains the importance of Functional Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and provides examples that quantify and clearly show what happens when different dimensioning and tolerancing strategies are used. Indeed the point of the book is to present the methods for determining if a given tolerancing scheme will lead to functioning parts and assemblies and to present the best method to communicate the results.
The text presents linear tolerance stackups on parts and assemblies dimensioned and toleranced using the traditional plus and minus system, and on parts and assemblies dimensioned and toleranced using GD&T. Tolerance Stackups using GD&T are covered in greater depth, as GD&T is the only way to clearly specify the relationship of part features and ensure the part will function.
Worst-case, statistical and adjusted statistical tolerance analysis methods are presented. Most of the examples and exercises are solved using both techniques, allowing the reader to compare the results and gain a better understanding of their pros and cons. Background material is presented for the statistical techniques, and general guidelines are offered regarding the factors that must be in place for these techniques to be valid.
The techniques presented in this book are easy to learn and easy to use. These methods are also more straightforward and more flexible than other methods encountered in industry.
The text stresses the importance of a standardized approach to solving Tolerance Stackup problems and the importance of a standardized tool for reporting the results. Extensive coverage is included on the Tolerance Stackup Report Form and the Tolerance Stackup Sketch, both of which are critical elements to solving Tolerance Stackups and reporting the results.
The material in this text is coordinated with and explains how to use our Tolerance Stackup Software Toolset, the Tolerance Analysis software offered by Advanced Dimensional Management.
The ways that part and assembly geometry affect a tolerance stackup are discussed, as are the effects of the assembly sequence / process. The reader is taken through a series of examples comparing how geometric effects are compounded is certain situations, leading to greater variation than expected.
Our two Tolerance Analysis books “Mechanical Tolerance Stackup & Analysis” and “Tolerance Stackup, Tolerance Analysis and Tolerancing Manual: Plus and Minus Edition” are the definitive professional references on Tolerance Analysis available. When combined with their accompanying workbook, these texts are equally suitable for use a college textbook or as a textbook for industrial training. The material in the books is the result of many years experience, and the methods presented have been applied and tested in many industries on many products. By using the principles and techniques illustrated in these texts the student will be able to maximize their part tolerances and improve their designs, leading to increased profits, decreased scrap, higher quality and increased market share.

So you don’t use GD&T but still need to do Tolerance Stackups and Analyze your tolerances … This is the book for you. We took our textbook “Mechanical Tolerance Stackup and Analysis”, removed or rewrote the GD&T-based content and converted it into a new text for people who only encounter dimensioning with +/- tolerances. This text is essentially a condensed version of “Mechanical Tolerance Stackup and Analysis”, with significant reworking to adjust the content for issues related to plus and minus Dimensioning and Tolerancing. This book is for people who do not use GD&T. Yes, you should use GD&T, especially if you want to clearly explain allowable part variation and clearly understand what the drawing specifications mean. Unfortunately everyone out there hasn’t yet made the move to GD&T, so we created this text as a tool to help those still in the world of plus and minus Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
The text starts with fundamental concepts and terminology and progress into more advanced topics. Standard problem solving and analytical techniques are developed using a logical, progressive approach, taking the reader through a series of examples and exercises increasing from simple to complex.
